Volunteering after a brain injury provides an opportunity to develop work skills, meet friends with similar interests and give back to the community. The following tips, adapted from an article on www.helpguide.org and materials from Metro Volunteers (www.metrovolunteer.org), can act as a guide on your journey to finding a volunteer position that works for you!
Define your interests and goals. Volunteer in your interest area and you will find your volunteer experience far more enjoyable. Whether you care about animals, the environment or helping others, find a position that serves a cause you support.
Make a list of your needs for a volunteer position. Is transportation a consideration for you? Can you only work in the afternoons? Make a list of your needs, and keep the list handy while evaluating possible positions.
If your long-term goal is employment, consider your potential career field. Volunteering provides an opportunity to create a valuable network of acquaintances that could potentially lead to a job. If possible, find a position that allows you to meet people in your career field of choice.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. When evaluating a volunteer position, ask questions about the organization’s history and the services they provide in the community.
Make sure you know what’s expected. Though the position may not be paid, each volunteer job comes with a unique set of tasks and responsibilities. Before you say yes to a position, make sure you understand and can perform all of the duties.
If a volunteer position is not fitting your needs, look for something new. As a volunteer, you have the right to be treated with respect, to voice your needs and concerns and to have your time used wisely. If for any reason your needs are not met, don’t be afraid to look for another opportunity.
