Pets for Patriots Works with Wounded Warrior Program at Fort Carson, Colorado

Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects loyal adult shelter pets with our country's loyal service men and women, launched a program with the Army’s AW2 Wounded Warrior Program in Fort Carson, Colorado to help wounded soldiers transition to civilian life with the help of an adopted adult pet. An estimated four million shelter dogs and cats are put to death every year, in spite of numerous studies proving the emotional and physical benefits of companion pets.

Pets for Patriots founder and executive director, Beth Zimmerman, proposed the idea to the AW2 care team at Fort Carson during an April visit to the Army base.

“Many wounded soldiers aren’t eligible for a service animal, but would benefit from a new pet friend,” says Zimmerman. “Working with the AW2 team, we can connect recovering veterans with an adult pet in need. Not only do veterans enjoy the innate therapeutic qualities of a companion animal, they become that pet’s hero for saving its life.”
